Dan Gable is the most recognized figure in college wrestling and his achievements transcended the sport. Gable captured the imagination of the wrestling world as a collegian at Iowa State. He compiled a career mark of 118-1 with the Cyclones. He won his first 118 college matches, a then-NCAA record, before suffering his only defeat in the NCAA finals as a senior. He was a three-time All-American, three-time Big Eight champion and two-time national champion. Gable led the Cyclones to national championships in 1969 and 1970 and a Big Eight championship in 1970. Gable earned international fame in 1972, winning a gold medal in freestyle competition at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. On his way to the medal, he didn’t surrender a single point.
