Known as one of Iowa State’s most prolific two-sport standouts in the school’s history, Mike Busch was a man among boys both on the football field and baseball diamond.

In football, Busch was an iron man and steady performer, playing in all 44 games in his four-year career. He finished his career with 1,061 yards receiving from his tight end position, ranking him 10th all-time. After Busch had played his final game, the awards rushed in. He earned his second all-Big Eight Conference selection and United Press International, Kodak, and the Walter Camp Foundation Busch first-team All-America honors.

As for baseball, Busch was Iowa State’s Sultan of Swat. His senior year Busch crushed 17 home runs, the most ever by a Cyclone in a single season, and 31 in his career, also the most ever by a Cyclone. He was awarded the prestigious 1990 Big Eight Athlete of the Year Award.

After graduation, both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Busch. Busch choose to pursue baseball and made his major league debut in 1995 with the Dodgers.
