Everett Kischer co-captained one of Iowa State’s best football teams, the 7-1-1 1938 squad. During the season, the 1938 team earned the distinction of being the first Cyclone squad to receive a national ranking on the Associated Press poll, making the 18th spot. The team, under the direction of “Smilin” Jim Yeager, came within one victory of the Orange Bowl. Its only loss came to a No. 7 Oklahoma squad by the score of 10-0. The game was played in front of a huge Clyde Williams Field crowd.

Kischer was an unanimous selection to the Associated Press all-Big Six team. He also was selected to the Chicago Tribune College All-Star team where he teamed with future Hall of Fame Chicago Bear Sid Luckman. The Newspaper Enterprises Association selected Kischer to its third-team All-America squad.

Kischer threw for 620 yards and six touchdowns in 1938. He also ran for 390 yards and averaged 38 yards punting. “The Rabbit” was responsible for 70 of the Cyclones’ 125 points that year.

The Cyclone quarterback began to shine as a sophomore under coach George Venkeer. The Cyclones went 3-3-2 in 1936 without losing at State Field. The following year, he posted a mark that has stood since 1937. In a game against Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., Kischer picked off four Wildcat passes to set the ISU record for interceptions in a game. Standout Barry Hill equaled the mark 37 years later.

Kischer was one of six Cyclones from the 1938 squad that was chosen in the 1939 NFL Draft, getting picked by the Chicago Bears.
