Bill Cain’s three-year ISU career ranks among the best in the annals of Cyclone basketball. A native of White Plains, N.Y., the burly 6-6 forward was one of the most dominant post players in the Big Eight in the late 1960s. Cain compiled 1,498 points and 957 boards from 1968-70, ranking 11th and third, respectively, on the ISU career scoring and rebounding charts.

Cain never averaged below 16.7 ppg in his three seasons at ISU and finished his career with a 19.5 ppg scoring average, the fourth-highest career scoring clip in school history. In addition to being an outstanding offensive threat, Cain was a one-man rebounding machine. Cain, who led the Big Eight in rebounding in 1969 and 1970, has the second-best career rebounding average in ISU history at 12.4 rpg. In 1970, Cain grabbed 396 caroms for a 15.2 rpg average, both single season school records Cain still holds today. His 396 boards in 1970 ranks only behind Wilt Chamberlain for the most single-season caroms in Big Eight Conference history. Cain also owns ISU’s single-game rebounding standard, snaring 26 boards against Minnesota Dec. 9, 1969.

Cain ended his career at ISU in 1970 as a two-time first-team all-Big Eight selection (1969, 1970), one of only 13 Cyclones in school history to earn first-team all-league honors twice. He was also honored as the 1968 Big Eight Newcomer of the Year, playing alongside fellow ISU Hall of Famer and All-American Zaid Abdul-Aziz (Don Smith) to form one of the most powerful frontcourts in college basketball. The 1968 team tied for third in the Big Eight Conference with an 8-6 mark.

Cain was drafted in the third round of the 1970 NBA Draft as the 42nd pick of the Portland Trailblazers.
