Diane Doles’ leadership and talent provided Iowa State volleyball with a smooth transition from the AIAW to the NCAA in the early 1980s. Doles emerged on the Big Eight Conference volleyball scene as a junior in 1982, hitting a school-record .319 (408k-104e-953a) from the floor en route to first-team all-Big Eight accolades. The River Groves, Ill., native led the Cyclones to their highest conference finish at the time (T-3rd) and helped ISU place second in the Big Eight Conference Tournament, hitting .351 to earn all-tournament kudos.

The 5’11 middle blocker capped off her illustrious career in 1983 with another solid season as a senior, earning her second-straight first-team all-Big Eight honor. She is one of only two Cyclones in school history to earn first-team all conference honors twice in their respective career. Doles shattered ISU’s single-season block assist and solo block marks as a senior, recorded 60 solo blocks and 117 block assists, records that still stand today. She ended her Cyclone career earning ISU’s Female Athlete of the Year and Big Eight Medal of Honor Awards in 1983.

In all, Doles still holds numerous school records, including career hitting percentage (.285) and three-game match service aces with seven. Doles also competed her freshman year on the ISU track & field team, breaking the indoor school-record in the high jump with a leap of 5-7.
