Brian Tietjens was the greatest high jumper in Iowa prep history and the best ever to compete at Iowa State or a college in the state of Iowa while attending ISU from 1982-85 . The native of Kensett, Iowa, was a perfect specimen when it came to possessing high jumping skills. The lanky 6-4, 157-pounder still owns the best leap in Iowa prep history (7-3) and the best jump in Iowa collegiate history (7-6 1/2), clearing the height in both indoors and outdoors.

Tietjens was one of the best prep high jumpers in the nation while attending North Central-Manly High School. He was the first Iowa prep to clear 7-feet, jumping 7-3 at the Drake Relays, and he set the U.S. high school record indoors with a 7-2 jump.

Tietjens continued his success at the next level, winning an NCAA title, three Big Eight championships and earning All-America honors four times for the Cyclones. After finishing third in the high jump at the NCAA Championship as a freshman and sophomore, Tietjens won the NCAA title as a junior in 1985. He claimed that NCAA crown with a leap of 7-5 to win the NCAA indoor high jump title.

Unfortunately, Tietjens’ career was cut short by stress fractures. He broke his left foot in an accident in the summer of 1982. The bone never properly healed, which stopped him from competing in his senior season. In his three years with the Cyclones, he helped ISU track coach Bill Bergan win four Big Eight titles and claim two fourth-place finishes at the NCAA meet (1984-indoor; 1985-outdoor).

Tietjens has been inducted into the Iowa High School Track Coaches Hall of Fame and the Drake Relays Hall of Fame.
