AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State Cyclones are excited to announce an addition to their roster for the 2018 gymnastics season. Head coach Jay Ronayne announced that the Cyclones will be adding Sophia Steinmeyer from Berks Gymnastics Academy to the gymnastics team next fall.
"Sophia first caught our attention because she is a great vaulter," head coach Jay Ronayne said. "She has been competing a beautiful Yurchenko one and a half twist for a few years. That vault is one of the most difficult vaults being performed in NCAA competition right now. She is the two time Region 7 vault champion and was the nation's 2nd best vaulter in her age bracket at last year's JO National Championships. But she is solid on the other three events, too. She placed eighth in the country in the All Around at that meet. She is really good right now and I see her getting better as her gymnastics matures over the next few years. I look forward to seeing some great things from Sophia as a Cyclone."
Steinmeyer will be graduating from Wilson High School this May after competing for Berks Gymnastics Academy throughout her club career. The impressive gymnast has been a Level 10 gymnast since her 2012 season, and has earned many accomplishments in her time competing. One of her most note-worth meets was the 2016 JO Nationals where she placed second on vault and 8th all-around. This was her second time at the competition after qualifying and tying for fourth on vault in 2015. Steinmeyer is a two-time Region 7 Champion on vault and earned 19 top-10 finishes at the Pennsylvania State Championships in her Level 10 career.
