Cyclones Finish Day One of Jon Messick Invite

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Iowa State tennis team opened its first day of competition at the Jon Messick Invitational Friday with four singles wins and one victory in doubles action. Â
Erin Freeman and Regina Espindola were the only duo from Iowa State to pick up a win. Freeman and Espindola went on to defeat Anna Battersby and Madeline Doherty of Northern Colorado, 6-2. At the number one spot, Maty Cancini and Ekaterina Repina fell to a pair from South Dakota, 6-3.
In singles play, ISU finished 4-3. Repina, Margarita Timakova, Annabella Bonadonna and Karen Alvarez were the four Cyclones who came out with wins.Â
Repina defeated Rafa Mora of UNC, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, while Timakova won 6-2, 6-2 against UNC's Carrigan Blanchard. Meanwhile, Bonadonna picked up a win versus Mana Koitabashi of UNC, 6-3, 6-0, and Alvarez won 6-2, 6-1 over Elisabeth Walsh.Â
Cancini found herself on the wrong end of a long match against Emily Luetschwager of Colorado State, falling, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-1.Â
The tournament will resume Saturday at 10 a.m. (Central) with one set of doubles and one round of singles play.Â
