AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Kevin Dresser announced his inaugural signing day class as the Cyclones' head man. The class of 2018 features eight wrestlers, including four top-100 prospects. The group of incoming freshmen also includes five standouts from the state of Iowa.
Iowa State's signing class includes Tyler Buesgens, David Carr, Hunter DeJong, Weston DiBlasi, Francis Duggan, Anthony Sherry, Joel Shapiro and Grant Stotts.
Tyler Buesgens, a prep out of Scott West in Minnesota, is a two-time Minnesota state place-winner. As a freshman he finished fourth, and as a sophomore he took third. In 2016, he was a Cadet Fargo All-American. At Iowa State, he projects to wrestle at 184 pounds.
The future Cyclones are highlighted by David Carr, the son of legendary Iowa State wrestler Nate Carr. The Perry, Ohio native is tabbed as the No. 5 overall recruit in the class of 2018 per FloWrestling. Carr is a four-time state champion (three in Ohio, one in Kentucky) and has compiled a 153-6 prep record.
On the national and international stage, Carr is a two-time FloWrestling Who's #1 champion, two-time Ironman champion, a Fargo national champion and was a Cadet World bronze medalist. Carr projects to wrestle at 165 or 174 pounds for the Cyclones.
Hunter DeJong was the final add for the Cyclones in the class of 2018. DeJong wrestles for Sibley-Ocheyedan High School, where he finished fourth at 195 pounds last year. This summer, DeJong competed for the United States at the Cadet Pan-American Games and won the freestyle gold medal at 85 and the silver medal in greco. In 2016, he was a double Fargo All-American.
Weston DiBlasi is the younger brother of current wrestler Colston DiBlasi. DiBlasi is currently ranked No. 74 by Intermat. He is a two time Missouri Class 4 place-winner and a 2016 finalist. He projects to wrestle at 125 or 133 pounds.
Iowa City West's Francis Duggan also picked the Cyclones. Duggan is the No. 70 overall recruit in the country according to Intermat. Duggan, who is transferring to Iowa City West for his senior season, is a three-time Pennsylvania state place-winner. While wrestling for Cedar Cliff, North Allegheny and Cumberland Valley, he racked up a career record of 119-20. This summer, Duggan earned All-America honors at Fargo for the second straight season. Duggan will wrestle at heavyweight.
Anthony Sherry is a three-time Iowa state place-winner from Glenwood, Iowa. He's never finished lower than fourth and finished runner-up last season. Sherry is a four-time cadet Fargo All-American. He will wrestle at 184 or 197 pounds at Iowa State.
The Cyclones also got a top-50 prospect with in-state signee Joel Shapiro. Shapiro, a prep star at Valley High School in West Des Moines, is tabbed at No. 46 by FloWrestling in this class. Shapiro went undefeated last season en route to a class 3A state title at 160 pounds. He is also a two-time Fargo All-American and was third at UWW Cadet World Team trials this summer at 85kg. Shapiro projects to wrestle at 184 or 197 pounds for Iowa State.
Grant Stotts will be joining teammate Shapiro at Iowa State. As a prep, Stotts has made the finals at the Iowa High School State Championships three times. In 2016, he won the title. Stotts will wrestle at 165 or 174 pounds next season. Austin Stotts, Grant's brother, is currently on Iowa State's roster.
