AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (6-2, 0-0 Big 12) defeated in-state foe Iowa (4-6, 0-2 Big Ten), 84-78 in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series in front of a raucous crowd at Hilton Coliseum on Thursday night. The Cyclones battled back from a five-point halftime deficit to win their sixth-straight game.
Freshman Lindell Wigginton was superb in his first Cy-Hawk rivalry game, pouring in 24 points while shooting 9-of-18 from the field, including 4-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc. Do-it-all guard Nick Weiler-Babb put together yet another well-rounded performance with 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and a career-high four steals.
In the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, Iowa State retakes an 8-7 lead heading into tomorrow night's swimming and diving meet at Beyer Pool in Ames.
How it Happened
A back-and-forth first half that saw each team lead by as many as five points came to an end with Iowa jumping out to a 41-36 advantage. Iowa State struggled to find a rhythm offensively at times, suffering through a 1-of-9 stretch late in the half as the Hawkeyes turned a five-point ISU lead into a five-point deficit at the end of the stanza. Iowa made four of its last five shots to close the half.
Wigginton scored 10 points to lead the Cyclones in the first half, to go with two assists. Solomon Young chipped in eight points and a team-high six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
Iowa State flipped the script in the second half, and the Cyclone freshman trio of Wigginton, Terrence Lewis and Cameron Lard were a huge part of the turnaround. Trailing 55-52 with 14:02 left in the game, Lewis and Lard combined to score Iowa State's next 11 points, with Lard punching home an and-1 dunk to put the exclamation point on the run, giving the Cyclones a 63-57 lead they would not surrender.
Wigginton, who scored 12 points in the second half, was also tremendous facilitating the offense with Nick Weiler-Babb and Donovan Jackson. Iowa State held on down the stretch, despite a furious Iowa rally and ISU going over five minutes without a field goal late in the game. Hans Brase and Weiler-Babb both hit key free throws down the stretch to stave off the Hawkeyes and hold on for an 84-78 victory.
The Cyclones also put forth a scrappy defensive effort, forcing 12 Hawkeye turnovers in the second half and 18 for the game. Iowa State turned the ball over just eight times all night.
Players of Note
Lindell Wigginton had yet another monster performance. The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, native scored 24 points while also grabbing two rebounds and two assists. Wigginton joined Marcus Fizer as the only Cyclone freshmen to score 20+ points in three consecutive games.
Nick Weiler-Babb put up his fourth double-double of the season. He had 15 points and 10 assists, making it his fourth-straight game with at least 10 dimes. Weiler-Babb was also active on the glass, hauling in six rebounds and a career-high four steals.
Solomon Young battled all night in the post. The sophomore score eight points and pulled down seven rebounds, while doing much of the dirty work down low to limit Iowa's front line.
Hans Brase played a critical role off the bench. The senior scored five points and tied for a team-high seven rebounds in 27 minutes of action. Brase also piled up three assists and two steals.
