AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State secondary gained more experience when Georgia graduate transfer Reggie Wilkerson joined the Cyclone football team in May.
A native of Citra, Fla., Wilkerson saw action in 19 games as a Bulldog over the last two seasons, tallying 11 tackles in 2015.
The former four-star recruit and top-50 cornerback nationally recently sat down with Cyclones.com in this Q&A.
What were some of the reasons you chose Iowa State?
When I came on my visit, the coaches showed me a lot of love. I felt real comfortable with the chemistry of all of the coaches. They made me feel welcome and you can tell it's a family atmosphere. When I first met the players, they already knew everything about me, and I was like, 'Man, that's pretty cool.' I did my homework on them and they did their homework on me. I have already created a bond with these guys and feel like we are already on the same page.
What were some of the schools you were looking at after you graduated from Georgia?
Toledo, Wake Forest, USF and Mississippi State were also schools I was considering.
What has been your first impression of head coach Matt Campbell and the coaching staff?
They want to win. Everybody wants to win. I can see it and I can feel it. It's noticeable when you walk around the Bergstrom Football Complex.
How have your workouts been going so far?
It's been smooth. I stayed in shape before I got here.
Where do you see yourself playing in the secondary?
The coaches and I have talked about playing at safety and the Star position. I can play corner as well, so if they need me to move around and help the team, that's what I am here for.
Being from Florida, were you familiar with some of the Cyclones in that area?
I know Albert Gary really well. We went to the same high school. I also know incoming freshman O.J. Tucker, who is from the same area.
What was your experience like playing at Georgia in the SEC?
Physical. I mean, I am pretty sure every conference is physical, but it's really physical in the SEC. It's hard to explain. The SEC is a tough league with a lot of great players.
Were you familiar with the Big 12 before you arrived at Iowa State?
I was. I watch a lot of football, including Big 12 games. There are great quarterbacks in this league on teams who throw the ball a lot. It's a great opportunity for me.
What is something unique about yourself?
Most people don't know I have a twin sister (Regina). She is on the track & field team at Florida Atlantic University.
