MINNEAPOLIS, Minn- The Iowa State tennis team opened the 2017-18 season at the Gopher Invitational Thursday at the University of Minnesota. The first day consisted of two matches for each doubles team, with three doubles pairs representing the Cyclones.
Margarita Timakova and Annabella Bonadonna had a strong showing, defeating Theodora Kyriakopoulou and Marta-Anna Tynna of South Dakota State, 6-3. They went on to win their bracket, downing South Dakota's Anastasia Bondarenko and Aria Chemodanova, 6-1.
Erin Freeman and Regina Espindola started with a 6-2 win against Nanette Nylund and Luana Stanciu of South Dakota. In the second match, Espindola teamed with Karen Alvarez and the duo fell to Minnesota's River Hart and Caroline Ryba, 7-5.
Play begins Friday at 8 a.m. with two doubles matches and two singles matches to follow throughout the day. The tournament continues through Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Center.Â
