LAS VEGAS (AP) - Roland Roberts scored 24 points to lead Southern Illinois to a surprise 66-57 win over Iowa State in the second round of the Las Vegas Tourney Thursday.
Roberts, a Virginia Tech transfer, went 10-for-16 from the field and had six rebounds. Kent Williams added 10 points.
Jake Sullivan led Iowa State (1-1) with 21 points. Shane Power added 11.
Trailing 36-25 at halftime, Southern Illinois (3-0) rallied and took the lead for good, 51-50, on two Stetson Hairston free throws with 5:01 to go. Southern Illinois built a 10-point lead, its largest, in the closing seconds.
Iowa State only shot 28 percent in the second half after shooting 57 percent in the first. Southern Illinois shot 50 percent in the second, 25 percent in the first.
After Southern Illinois scored the first two points of the game, Iowa State went on a 21-6 run and never surrendered the lead the rest of the first half.
Iowa State's largest lead, 21-18, came with 10:58 left in the half. Southern Illinois went on a 7-0 run, but never came closer in the first half.
