Big 12 Champion Hines Sits in Fourth

SACRAMENTO, Calif.- Neil Hines continues his impressive senior campaign as it nears its end, sitting in fourth place in the decathlon with 3,907 points at the end of the first day, Wednesday, in Sacramento, Calif. at the NCAA Championships.

Hines won the decathlon at the Big 12 Championships with 7,508 points, and is on pace to beat that mark so far at the national meet. This is the Morse Bluff, Neb. native's first competition since then.

“Neil has improved himself so much, that he's good in all the events,” Iowa State head men's track and field coach Steve Lynn said. “We came in with a goal to earn All-America honors, and he certainly has a chance to do more than that.”

The Big 12 champion started the day with a personal best time of 11.36 in the 100-meter dash, and followed that up with a solid jump of 22 1/4, in the long jump. Hines then vaulted up the standings with a strong showing in the shot put. The toss of 46-8 3/4 surpassed his career best by over three feet.

“Neil did a great job all the way through, he was ready coming into the meet,” Lynn said. “The shot put is where he made up a lot of ground, he hit [46-8 3/4] on his last effort, which was 75 points up on what he did at the Big 12 meet.”

Another personal record ensued after the shot put in the high jump, as Hines leaped 6-8 3/4. The senior tied for first in the event and continued moving up the ranks.

“He steadily moved up the standings all day, and just did a great job,” Lynn said. “We'll enjoy that for about an hour, and then get ready for tomorrow.”

Hines finished his day with a 50.63 in the 400-meter dash and raised his point total to 3,907. The academic all-Big 12 honoree now looks forward to tomorrow, where he will compete in some of his best events, including the pole vault.

“We'll see what happens tomorrow,” Lynn said. “If good things happen to good people, good things will happen to him, because he is the epitome of what a student-athlete should be.”

Jangy Addy of Tennessee tops the leaderboard with 4,211 points, pursued closely by Jake Arnold of Arizona and Joe Detmer of Wisconsin, with 4,070 and 3,990 respectively.

Events in the decathlon begin tomorrow, the final day of the event, at noon CDT with the 110-meter hurdles.
