BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ? Iowa State tied an NCAA Championship record for 3-pointers made in a game, making 16-of-38 treys in an 85-53 rout of East Tennessee State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday night at E.A. Diddle Arena.
The Cyclones, which advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season, held the Lady Bucs to just 53 points, the fewest points allowed by a Cyclone team in NCAA Championship history. The 32-point margin of victory is the second-best in school history in a NCAA Championship game. ISU beat Howard, 100-61 (39 points) on March 16, 2001.

The story of the game was 3-point shooting, as ISU fell two shy of its season mark for treys in a game (Detroit-18). The 16 3-pointers made by the Cyclones ties the NCAA Championship single-game mark with Harvard (vs. Vanderbilt in 1996) and South Dakota State, which recorded 16 3-pointers in its win over TCU this evening.
“It is not any different than what we have done all year,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “We did it right from the opening of the game and the kids were really locked in, which allowed us to get out to a good start. To have a good start really relaxed everyone. We shot the ball great today and we ran our stuff really well and we had open looks and knocked them down.”
The Cyclones' hot shooting began right from the opening minutes, as ISU forged a 17-5 lead with 12:05 left in the first period. Heather Ezell hit two treys and Kelsey Bolte and Amanda Nisleit each recorded one to get the Cyclones going.
ISU and ETSU traded hoops throughout the next four minutes until the Cyclones went on a decisive run to blow open the game. A 13-2 rally gave ISU a 39-15 lead with 4:42 left before intermission. Nisleit, Ezell and Alison Lacey all knocked down triples to help the Cyclones maintain a comfortable lead.
Lacey buried two more 3-pointers in the final four minutes to help ISU hold a 47-25 lead at the break. Lacey made 4-of-6 shots from downtown to aid the Cyclones to a 10-of-20 effort from beyond the arc in the first half. It was the second-most points the Cyclones have scored in a half this season.
ISU's lead ballooned to 30 points (57-27) in the early moments of the second half, as Nicky Wieben scored six of ISU's first 10 points after the break.
The Lady Bucs picked up their fullcourt pressure to go on a 13-2 run while cutting the lead to 62-43 with 10:42 left in the game. Taronda Wiles made three buckets in the run to help ETSU inch closer.
However, three consecutive treys increased the Cyclone lead to 71-43 with 7:52 left in the game. Bolte canned one and Lacey drilled two deep 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to put the game out of reach.
Lacey finished the game with 18 points behind a 6-of-11 effort from 3-point range. Lacey now has 1,103 points in her career, moving to No. 16 on ISU's all-time scoring list. Four other Cyclones scored in double figures (Bolte-12, Ezell-11, Wieben-10, Nisleit-10).
ISU, which has now advanced to the second round in eight of its last 10 tries, will battle the winner of the Tennessee/Ball State game Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
