AMES, Iowa—The Fred Hoiberg era officially got underway Friday night in Hilton Coliseum, as the Iowa State men's basketball team controlled its season debut from the opening tip, defeating Northern Arizona 78-64.
Senior Jamie Vanderbeken led Iowa State's offensive attack with a career-high 23 points on 8-16 shooting and 6-11 on 3-pointers. Vanderbeken eclipsed his previous career high of 15 points with 5:34 remaining in the first half. The Belleville, Ontario, native dropped 20 points in opening half. Vanderbeken also tied for the game high on rebounds (eight) with fellow Cyclone Jake Anderson.
Hoiberg, one of the top 3-pointer shooters in Cyclone history, has had made an apparent early impact on his squad, as the Cyclones went 11-23 from behind the arc. Northern Arizona, a squad that some prognosticators picked to win the Big Sky Conference, shot 3-13 from 3-point range.
Diante Garrett posted a solid night with 19 points and a game-high seven assists.
The Cyclones had four players in double figures with Vanderbeken (23), Garrett (19), Anderson (15) and Melvin Ejim (10).
Vanderbeken (20) and Garrett (15) accounted for all of the Cyclones' first-half points. Ejim became Iowa State's third scorer of the game with a bucket in the paint 13 seconds into the second half. Scott Christopherson quickly joined the scoring party when he nailed a 3-pointer 38 seconds after Ejim's basket to give the Cyclones a 40-20 lead, resulting in Northern Arizona calling a timeout.
The Cyclones play their second game of the year Sunday at 1 p.m. inside Hilton Coliseum against Alabama State.
