AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (13-18, 3-6 Big 12) earned its first midweek win of the season on Tuesday, downing in-state foe UNI (16-12, 4-2 MVC) by a score of 8-3 at the Cyclone Sports Complex on a blustery day.
The Cyclones opened the month of April with a convincing win over the Panthers who are ranked 48 in the RPI as ISU used two three-run innings to power past the team from Cedar Falls.
Tuesday's game featured four homers, two from each team, as the wind was billowing at 25 miles per hour. ISU took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back, holding control throughout as it earned its 13th win of the year.
Milaysia Ochoa and Alesia Ranches each had a pair of hits on the afternoon, while Angelina Allen, Tiana Poole, Ashley Minor, Maddie Knowles, McKenna Andrews and Olivia Wardlow all chipped in one. Minor had a game-high two RBI on the day as she blasted her fifth homer of the year in the third inning.
Karlie Charles started in the circle for the second straight outing, going three innings and giving up two runs on four hits. Aziza Rodriguez (4-6) had a great outing in her relief appearance, pitching the remaining four frames and allowing just one run while striking out a career-high five batters.
UNI had eight hits on the afternoon, with six coming from three players. Alexis Pupillo, Ava Smithson and Daryn Lamprecht each had two hits and each accounted for one of the three RBI on the day. Three Panther pitchers saw the circle, with Samantha Heyer (7-5) earning the loss.
How it Happened
The Panthers made things interesting out of the gates, loading the bases with no outs and cleanup hitter Addison McElrath at the plate. Charles was able to get McElrath to ground into a 6-2-3 double play to keep a run off the board as ISU finished the frame with a line out to escape unharmed.
In the bottom of the first, Ochoa got on thanks to an outfield error. She would be driven in by Ranches who blasted a ball so hard off the outfield wall that it kept her from gaining extra bases. After advancing to second on a passed ball, Ranches was then driven in by Poole who singled to center. Poole then advanced on a passed ball of her own and advanced to third on a fly out. UNI's catcher then tried to throw out Minor on the base paths but the ball missed its mark, allowing Poole to come in from third base.
It was three up, three down for both in the second before UNI did some damage in the third. Both Lamprecht and Pupillo smashed solo shots to trim the Cyclone lead to one heading to the bottom of the inning.
Allen started the third much like how the Panthers did, by blasting her tenth homer of the season over the right field wall. Then, with two outs and one on, Minor matched Allen's homer with one of her own – also over the right field wall – to push the Iowa State lead to 6-2.
Both UNI and ISU left two stranded in a scoreless fourth before play turned to the fifth.
After a three up, three down top half for UNI, Iowa State tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of play. With Carli Spelhaug on second thanks to a Panther error, Andrews singled through the left side to bring her home. Wardlow chipped in a single to put two runners on the bases with Ochoa up to bat. Milaysia then doubled to left center on the first pitch of the at-bat to score Andrews and make it 8-2.
Neither team would score in the sixth, but the Panthers came across in the top of the seventh in an attempted rally but that was all for UNI, as it fell 8-3.
