AMES, Iowa – Three unanswered goals flipped Friday's game on its head, as Iowa State (4-6-2, 1-5 Big 12) fell to the Kansas Jayhawks (9-3-2, 3-3-0 Big 12) at the Cyclones Soccer Complex by a score of 3-1.
In its first home match in two weeks, Iowa State struck first as rookie Megan Walters beat Kansas keeper Sophie Dawe to put the Cyclones up 1-nil. A KU equalizer came nine minutes later as the two teams would head to the break tied. A two-goal second stanza from the Jayhawks would put things away as Kansas walked away with a road conference win.
M. Walters scored a goal in her second home conference contest, as she provided the game-winner against Arizona in the opener. Four other Cyclones – Chloe Brougthon, Taylor Spitzer, Ella Ciardullo and Erin Hopewell – had shots on the evening. Isabella Agrusso, Ella Zimmerman and Kasey Cannistraro played the entire 90 for ISU, with Cannistraro nabbing seven saves.
For Kansas, three players collected scores. Emika Kawagishi, Kate Langfelder and Jillian Gregorski were KU's goal-scorers while four different Jayhawks picked up assists. Kansas keeper Sophie Dawe had three saves on the night.
Kansas held a 25-5 shot advantage over the Cyclones, placing 10 shots on goal on the night. KU also held the corner advantage, attempting 10 corners to ISU's zero. Iowa State pulled down more saves (7-3) while Kansas had more fouls (12-11). Kansas had three yellow cards on the evening.
How it Happened
Kansas came out of the gates firing, as the Jayhawks rattled off a pair of attempts in the first five minutes. KU would attempt four more goals over the next ten minutes, as they'd held ISU without an attempt.
ISU's first attempt in the 17th minute was a great one, as M. Walters lofted a left-footed ball just over the punching arms of Dawe to put the Cyclones on top, 1-0.
Kansas attempted three more shots over the next six minutes but saw all go astray as none were on target. KU's persistence paid off in the 26th minute though, as Kate Langfelder booted a right-footed shot into the net off a feed from Livvy Moore.
At the break, the teams were knotted at one apiece. KU held a 14-1 shot advantage at the half and had seven corner kicks. ISU had notched five saves to KU's zero.
The Jayhawks started the second stanza like the first, firing off shots. KU had four attempts in the first nine minutes before breaking through in the 55th minute with a score by Jillian Gregorski.
Kansas kept the pressure up, limiting ISU to just two shots in the next 20 minutes. In the 77th minute, Kansas scored again, making it 3-1, off the right foot of Emika Kawagishi.
KU would go on to win the game by a score of 3-1, as it has now won two of its last three matches.
Fannon's Thoughts
"Both halves, it was just a situation where it could have gone either way. Every second ball seemed to go their way and every chance we had to put our foot on the ball and calm the game down we ended up rushed. Because we were chasing, we didn't get the chance to change the momentum."
