AMES, Iowa – After scoring just over a minute into the game, Iowa State (4-7-2, 1-6 Big 12) was unable to hold onto its lead as Houston (7-3-4, 2-3-2 Big 12) left Iowa with a 2-1 victory Thursday evening to earn its first win since Sept. 18.
Just six ticks past the first minute, Megan Walters took a long feed from Isabella Agrusso and sent a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the net to put the Cyclones on top early, 1-0. Houston would answer right back just two minutes later to knot things up at one all before taking the lead in the 35th minute and holding it for the remainder of the game.
M. Walters now has her second goal in as many games and moves into a tie for most points (7) and goals (3) on the team. She has scored in three of the four home Big 12 contests for ISU. Walters also attempted a game-high seven shots. Ella Ciardullo had four shots of her own, while Lucy Froitzheim had a pair, placing both on target. Kasey Cannistraro pulled down six saves on the night.
Houston's Amaris Bumba and Madyson Bentil each picked up their second score of the season, while Ava Shannon earned an assist. Shannon led the Cougars with four shots and was tied with Bentil for the most on goal with two. Cougar keeper Maggie Manning notched two saves in her 90 minutes of work.
ISU recorded its most shots since Sept. 7, rattling off 19 on the evening and holding a seven-shot advantage over the Cougars. Houston won the corner war (6-3), while ISU recorded more saves, 6-3.
How it Happened
Iowa State came out of the gates firing, as its first shot went in as M. Walters beat the defense down the left side of the pitch before rocketing a shot past the Cougar keeper.
Houston got its first good luck with 3:13 on the block but saw it blocked out of bounds, earning a corner kick. Off the set piece, Shannon connected with Bumba, who headed in an equalizer and tied things up at one-all, not even four full minutes into the contest.
The Cyclones saw a flurry of opportunities fall away in the 11th minute, as three consecutive shots just missed. Headers from both Lauren Hernandez and Taylor Spitzer hit the crossbar, while M. Walters' next shot just went off target, out of bounds.
The Cougars didn't have another good chance until the 34th minute when they rattled off a pair of attempts in under ten seconds, but saw them blocked and saved, respectively.
A minute later, in the 35th minute, the Cougars broke the stalemate with a Bentil solo effort, who launched a right-footed shot past a diving Cannistraro and put UH on top, 2-1.
At the break, ISU led in shots (8-5) and saves (1-0), while Houston led in corners (4-2) and fouls (11-5).
Iowa State launched 11 second-half shots, but none could find the back of the net. The second stanza featured two more shots hitting the crossbar, one from ISU and one from UH, but neither was able to break through as the final 45 minutes went scoreless and Houston held on to win, 2-1.
Fannon's Thoughts
"Outside of the result being a negative, I'd say everything else was a positive tonight. We created so many chances and defended really well in all but three or four moments. We got the game plan right, and everyone was firing on all cylinders. It's difficult to take a result like this on the chin when it felt like we were nearly perfect."
