AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (15-3, 5-2 Big 12) defended the home court against West Virginia (13-5, 1-5 Big 12), taking the victory in four sets.
After Iowa State dropped the first set, the Cyclones responded taking the next three as set scores ended at 14-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-21.
Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Rachel Van Gorp saved 26 attacks from hitting the court to average 6.5 digs per set. The libero dialed in her 23rd straight match with 10 or more digs. Nayeli Ti'a also showed her defense, joining Van Gorp with double figure digs with 12. Morgan Brandt brought in her third double-double of the season and 29th of her career with 49 assists and 11 digs.
Tierney Jackson was dominant from the service line, sending over four aces while the Cyclones totaled 10 through the night. It is ISU's second 10-plus ace match this season, and 26th of Christy Johnson-Lynch's career. Jackson also was a force delivering 11 kills at .409 hitting.
Maya Duckworth moved up to 13th in ISU history as she inches closer to 1,000 with 984 career kills. Duckworth had 12 on the night through three sets of play at an efficient .333.
SET ONE
West Virginia got out to the lead and held the 15-10 advantage at the media timeout. The visitors remained up as ISU called a timeout at 18-11 with WVU hitting over .400. West Virginia would take the set 25-14.
SET TWO
A Jackson ace gave ISU an early 3-2 lead, while numerous ties and lead changes followed before either team reached 10. West Virginia reached the media timeout ahead 15-13, while a Duckworth kill and Ti'a ace tied it up. West Virginia went back up until a Cyclone run of three put ISU ahead at 21-20, causing a WVU timeout. Iowa State powered forward to tie up the match with a set score of 25-22.
SET THREE
ISU went ahead 10-6 on a setter kill by Brandt, with West Virginia following calling a timeout. Jackson's second ace came next to stretch a run of three. The Mountaineers came back to knot things at 13s, but ISU would not let the lead go as Pam McCune made it 17-15 with a kill to cap a long rally. Jackson helped ISU reach 20 first (20-16) on her third ace. Reagan Hanfelt had ISU's fourth ace of the set (23-18) and the Cyclones took the set 25-20 on Duckworth's ninth kill.
SET FOUR
The fourth began back-and-forth while Jackson kept her terrific serving going getting her fourth ace to put ISU up 5-4. Iowa State kept that run alive at four straight capped on a Ti'a kill. Hanfelt had a kill and then went back to serve to send over an ace, making it 10-7, ISU. The Cyclones had another run, this one of three, after an ace by Brandt to cause WVU's second called timeout (13-8). Iowa State earned its 20th point with WVU holding 14 as Duckworth put over kill No. 10. West Virginia fought off two match points, but ISU sealed it 25-21.

Iowa State is off this weekend, and back in Hilton next Thursday hosting Arizona at 6:30 p.m. for the Pink Match. ISU also visits Colorado next week on Saturday.
